The next section will discuss why you should have a recovery system in place and why you should use imagineLAN's products and expertise in doing so:

What is System Recovery?

System recovery is the process by which you can restore a problematic PC to a previous "state" in which it worked properly.   It is designed to correct and/or remove erroneous system changes made by users or programs, and to resolve conflicts resulting from faulty or conflicting hardware or software program installations.

There are numerous system recovery solutions on the market including ConfigSafe, rollback utilities, and the built-in System Restore feature in Windows Millennium Edition and Windows XP.  Additionally, some eSupport solutions provide automated system recovery capabilities through Web-based mechanisms, commonly referred to as Web-based self-healing technologies.  Each recovery technology works somewhat differently, but they have the common goal of attempting to return a system to the configuration in place before a problem was introduced.

imagine LAN's recovery technologies can enhance the functionality of many of the other tools by providing recovery features that are not present in other solutions.

Why System Recovery is Crucial

"OOPS, I accidentally deleted some files and now my PC doesn't work anymore."

"That program I downloaded from the Internet is wreaking havoc on my system."

"Where did I go wrong? The new scanner I installed seems to have 'broken' some of my software applications."

We've all experienced these types of PC problems first-hand or heard horror stories from colleagues. And undoubtedly, most PC support center calls begin with similar statements. These days PCs can accomplish much more, and many tasks are highly automated. Plus, the Internet has given them instant access to multitudes of downloadable software programs. Users don't need much technical know-how to install software and hardware, or to set up and customize their system. The combined effect of these factors is a marked increase in system problems and calls to support centers. In fact, for every system shipped the average PC vendor receives two warranty-related support calls[1].

"So how do I get the system back to the state it was in before …?"

When looking at ways to resolve configuration-related system problems, a user or analyst has several options:

  • Manual troubleshooting.  A common approach to problem resolution is to attempt a manual troubleshooting procedure that involves the user/customer's attempt to explain the problem and a technician's corresponding attempt to translate this information into something that makes sense.  This process has various opportunities for inaccuracy, frustration and failure—but it is all too often the most common troubleshooting process utilized by support analysts, for lack of a better method.

  • Reformat the hard drive or utilize vendor recovery CD.  Another popular solution is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows, or to use a recovery CD to restore the system to working condition.  But these problem resolution methods often result in a complete loss of all data, requiring the re-installation of every application—a very time-consuming task.  For these types of problems, system recovery is the fastest and most accurate way to restore a system to a working condition without losing data.

System recovery is more important now than ever, and the ability to recover a system accurately is tantamount to successful call resolution, which ultimately keeps support costs low. Whether you're responsible for the support center or for value-added marketing programs, it is important that your customers have a valuable, efficient route for problem resolution.  System recovery provides just that.  And imagine LAN solutions provide the mostly highly effective methods for recovering problem PCs.

Technology Innovation

When it comes to system protection and recovery, imagine LAN is the foremost innovator, with market-leading technologies that provide significantly higher recovery success and accuracy rates than other solutions.  Some of our recent innovations include:

Precision Recovery

Precision Recovery is an innovative and unique recovery technique that recovers troubled systems by easily identifying and removing only those system components that have created the malfunction.  Precision Recovery removes the "all or nothing" approach to system recovery and performs a more precise recovery, in which all working components are left intact while problems are corrected.  Precision Recovery provides the following capabilities:

  • Detects specific events such as hardware and software installations

  • Detection is not dependent on Windows Installer-based installations

  • Captures, isolates, and displays all Registry and (optionally) file system changes created by the specific installation

  • Provides options to retain, remove, or reapply Registry and/or file system changes for a specific installation during the restore process

  • This technology has received praise from customers and the press, and WinMag.com (Windows Magazine's online publication) recently awarded ConfigSafe with the distinguished WinList status, designating ConfigSafe as the best product in its class.

  • System Restore Internals

On Windows Millennium and Windows XP platforms, support providers and users already have a built-in recovery tool through System Restore.  However, while System Restore provides some basic protection and recovery capabilities, it is not a comprehensive solution (see System Restore analysis for further details).

imagine LAN has developed new technology that provides access to and manipulation of Windows System Restore data and functions.  The end result is a powerful and highly stable integrated solution that provides the highest possible success and accuracy rates when performing a recovery.  From within the ConfigSafe program, some of the following features are enabled:

  • System Restore checkpoint data can be viewed, including Registry and file adds/deletes/changes

  • System Restore checkpoints can be launched via several mechanisms

  • System Restore checkpoint restores can be initiated

  • Specific elements (Registry keys, files) of the System Restore checkpoint can be segregated and selected for partial restoration

  • System Restore checkpoints can be restored from Command Prompt mode with ConfigSafe’s SOS utilities

Why System Restore alone doesn't provide sufficient protection

As the system recovery tools market has gained widespread acceptance, Microsoft has correspondingly entered the market with the inclusion of basic system recovery capabilities in the operating system; for example, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) offers recovery capabilities through System Restore.  Windows XP (Whistler) will also incorporate a System Restore feature.  However, System Restore generally produces lower successful recovery rates and it has posed some problems for users and support professionals.  imagine LAN’s internal testing of System Restore, along with customer and published feedback, clearly indicates that System Restore has several major drawbacks:

  • Shuts down without warning, leaving system unprotected

  • No detection of non-Installer based hardware and software installations

  • No recovery capabilities from DOS or minimum boot mode

  • Uses Destructive Recovery techniques

Despite these limitations, System Restore checkpoint data, if integrated with a comprehensive system recovery tool, provides additional options for protecting and restoring Windows PCs.  In an effort to expand the usefulness of System Restore, imagine LAN's ConfigSafe for XP or CSX technology leverages the customer’s existing investment in System Restore while improving its effectiveness through an integrated system recovery solution.

Benefits of CSX Integrated Solution

The addition of CSX on Windows systems provides the following benefits:

  • End-users have a comprehensive self-service recovery tool that allows them to resolve most problems related to hardware/software installation or user initiated changes, without requiring vendor support.

  • Existing investment in System Restore can be leveraged and enhanced to provide a complete recovery solution without redundancy or excessive system overhead.

  • Greater support cost savings can be achieved through support call avoidance and reduction of support call duration.

  • Increases customer satisfaction with the support experience, resulting in increased customer retention rates.

How imagine LAN's system recovery technologies enhance an eSupport implementation

The PC support services marketplace is vast, and one of the fastest growing segments of the support market.  Additionally, it is a market that is in the midst of dynamic change…shifting from traditional phone and on-site support services to Web-based, automated, self-healing support models.  This dynamic change has been brought about due to the explosive growth of the Internet. The Internet has granted instantaneous access to information, products, and services, and desktop users expect that same swiftness in every aspect of their computing experience, especially when it comes to support.

Providing high quality system support to PC users is no easy task—it is expensive, time consuming and complex. An eSupport service model promises to provide the most significant potential to reduce support costs and more effectively handle the growing number of support incidents with minimal labor requirements.

imagine LAN's system protection and repair technologies can be readily combined with any eSupport solution to achieve greater support cost reductions through more comprehensive system repair and superior troubleshooting capabilities.  In addition, the integration of imagine LAN support technologies will enable support providers/developers to establish a substantially more effective eSupport solution.

Benefits of integration with imagine LAN system recovery technologies include:

  • Enables end user self-service recovery on local PC

  • reduces traffic load on Web/eSupport infrastructure

  • decreases potential need for assisted support

  • Persistent protection & recovery from all stages of disrepair

  • enables recovery when connections to Internet are disabled

  • provides recovery from Windows and from semi-operable/inoperable system states

  • Provides recovery when problem systems cannot access Windows-based local or Internet support tools

  • Expands range of protection and recovery beyond vendor pre-protected applications

  • offers automatic protection and recovery for third-party hardware and software

  • Increased rates of successful and accurate recovery due to Precision Recovery techniques

  • Powerful troubleshooting/analysis tools that can increase ability to repair complex problems in shorter time

  • Microsoft OS function compatibility and integration/co-existence with Microsoft support tools

  • Minimal resource requirements
